Several outlets, including the New York Post, have been reporting that the US is facing a butter shortage.
In their article, the NYP noted that “the amount of butter sitting in US storage facilities in August fell 10% month-over-month” and is “down 22% compared to the same time a year ago.”
Manitowoc County Agriculture Educator Angie Ulness has disputed the claims that we will be short on butter.
“You would expect when you hear ‘butter shortage’ that you would go to the store, and the shelves will be empty. That is not the case,” she revealed. “Butter is available, just the price has gone up a little bit.”
As for where those prices currently sit, Ulness told us, “Butter prices average around $2.88 per pound. That is up from $1.73 per pound last year.”
It’s a good thing we are not running short on butter because as Ulness explained, Americans are going to buy a lot of it for the holidays.
“Americans will be buying 161 million pounds of butter between the second week of November through Christmas. That is a lot of butter. Enough to make 11 billion butter cookies,” Ulness noted.
More people are expected to cook their own dinner this year as many people used the pandemic to teach themselves how to cook at home.
