The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is touting the importance of K9 Officers in the battle against drugs.
While on WOMT’s BE My Guest Program yesterday, Major Todd Cummings with the Sheriff’s Department explained that K9 officers are vital to their success in finding narcotics, “Not only on traffic stops, but on search warrants that we assist with.”
Major Cummings also spoke about how well their K9 units work with the units in the Manitowoc and Two Rivers Police Departments.
“We have what are called training groups. All the K9s that are in Manitowoc County train together,” he explained. “It is important to utilize those animals with other dogs in certain cases…so we have to make sure the animals do their job and don’t get into a dog fight.”
The County K9 program first began in the 1980s, with the Manitowoc Police Department starting theirs in 2009.
The Two Rivers Police Department got its first K9 officer this year, giving the county a total of five K9s, two each with the Sheriff’s Department and the Manitowoc Police Department.
