State Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu sees a big opportunity with the projected state budget surplus of $6.6 billion.
The 9th District Republican from Oostburg recently met with Governor Tony Evers.
In an appearance last week on WOMT’s Be My Guest program, he expressed a hope of working together, “with the huge surplus that we have…and the opportunity to provide historic tax relief…I know he met with the speaker yesterday, and in my meeting with the governor I said the speaker and I should be in the same room with the governor because things need to get through both houses.”
LeMahieu, who represents the city of Manitowoc and a large part of our listening area, was asked what he thinks should be done with the surplus money:
“I think that we have an opportunity to provide tax relief that we’ve never done before in the state of Wisconsin,” he told host Lee Douglas. “We still have four tax brackets, the top tax bracket is almost at 8%. There’s only eight other states that have higher top tax brackets than us. None of our neighbors do, including Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, they all have lower top, and most of these states actually have a flat tax.”
LeMahieu and other Republicans want to establish a flat tax.
That is an idea the governor has opposed.
