Two local organizations are combining their efforts on a food drive to assist those in need.
The local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is partnering with the Salvation Army of Manitowoc County in requesting donations of non-perishable food items in connection with the national Martin Luther King Day of Service on Tuesday, January 17th.
While on the WCUB Breakfast Club earlier this week, Donna Firman, the Board President of the Manitowoc County unit of NAMI explained, “We put together this food drive really because we understand at NAMI that people with mental illness cannot be in recovery if they are food insecure.”
She added that the stress of the last three years negatively affects the mental health of the community.
Lt. Jenny Moffit from the Manitowoc Salvation Army noted that while the Lakeshore area is quite giving during the Christmas season, in January there tends to be a lull.
“Think about when it’s cold outside, what do you want to eat?” she asked. “Well, I want to eat nice warm, hearty foods. Pasta meals, rice meals, soups, and those are all things we are running low on or even empty on.”
Food items can be dropped off at the Salvation Army Pantry location at 402 North 9th Street in Manitowoc by next Tuesday, January 17th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
