History was made 80 years ago today (March 17th).
It was on this day in 1943 that the Keel was laid for the USS Cobia by the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut.
The public is invited to help the Wisconsin Maritime Museum celebrate the Cobia’s birthday Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The museum will be featuring games, presentations, and self-guided tours through the sub while historic reenactors share stories and information.
The Holla on Wheels food truck will be parked outside the museum for lunch from 11:00-2:00 p.m.
Emily Shedal with the Maritime Museum fills us in on more of the fun, including a film being shown.
“It’s a documentary called Invisible Warriors, which tells the story of black ‘Rosie the Riveters’ working in wartime production during World War II,” she explained. “The historian and producer of the film Gregory Cooke will introduce the film and answer any questions. It is free to attend the film screening. Also at 2:45, a Cobia whistle salute (weather permitting) and a cake-cutting at 2:45.”
The entire day features a reduced admission price to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum of $8 per person.
