The month of April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
During an appearance on WOMT’s Be My Guest program recently, Manitowoc County District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre said that abuse can include neglect rising from a major problem sweeping through our area.
“Probably what’s most concerning right now is the drug epidemic also affects the kids,” she explained. “If somebody is really concerned about becoming high and how I’m getting my next fix and all that, are they paying attention to the kids getting to school, doing their homework, all of those things that those young kids need.”
LaBre also mentioned another hazard involved in this troubling situation.
“If you have controlled substances around the house, that’s extremely dangerous for children,” she noted. “I mean a small, small quantity of fentanyl can cause an adult to overdose. Can you imagine what it can do to, you know, a little kid?”
Fentanyl has reportedly become a major factor recently in the local illegal drug use scene.
