Starting next month, not all phone numbers in eastern Wisconsin will begin with 920.
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) has announced the addition of the 274-area code to overlay the area in which the 920 area code is in use.
This area includes Door County, south along Lake Michigan to Sheboygan County, and parts of Washington, Fond du Lac, Winnebago, Outagamie, and Brown Counties.
The reason for the additional area code is that the 920 area code is expected to run out of assignable prefixes by the first quarter of 2024.
The new 274 area code will be in service beginning May 5, 2023.
NANPA will assign 274 area codes once all of the 920 area codes have been assigned, which could happen as soon as the end of the year.
