If you have any unused or unwanted medications or pills around the house, today is the day you can safely dispose of them.
In celebration of National Drug Take Back Day, Froedtert Holy Family Memorial Hospital in Manitowoc is having a free Drug Take Back event from 9:00 am to noon.
Simply put those old prescription pills in a Ziplock-style bag and drop them off drive-through style at the hospital’s main entrance at 2300 Western Avenue.
Items accepted include prescription and over-the-counter meds, inhalers, creams ointments and liquids, pet meds, non-aerosol sprays, and herbal supplements.
The creams and liquids can be dropped off in their original packaging.
Operations Manager at the Manitowoc County Recycling Center Jon Reisenbuechler says events like this can not only help reduce the risk of drug abuse and accidental overdose, but there are environmental positives as well.
“When you start doing things like flushing your old medications or throwing them in the garbage, that can impact the water supply,” he explained. “Chemicals that we often dispose of through those routes do need to be removed from the water supply and that’s not an easy task. Sometimes they pass through the effluent at the water treatment facilities.”
Items that will NOT be accepted today include needles, sharps, mercury devices, chemical waste, anything electronic, or any personal care/hygiene products.
