After spending 9 years as a defensive lineman in the NFL, including 5 with the Packers, former Manitowoc resident Don Davey has a unique perspective on the Aaron Rodgers situation.
The 4 time NFL MVP quarterback was traded last week to the New York Jets in a draft pick exchange.
Davey, who was the featured speaker last Wednesday at the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, spoke with WOMT Sports about Rodgers leaving Green Bay.
“I think it’s probably best for the Packers and I think it’s probably best for Aaron too,” he said. “I believe he’s ready for a fresh start. He didn’t have his best season in 2022, he’s getting everything he wants from the Jets as far as surrounding him with the players he wants, he’s got his old familiar offensive coordinator (Nathaniel Hackett) with him and now he’s got a chance to make another run at it with a new team. And I wish him nothing but the best.”
The former Lincoln Ship and Wisconsin Badger said he’s also confident in the capabilities of Jordan Love.
“My friends in the front office and the coaching staff said that when Aaron didn’t show up for offseason workouts last year, Jordan Love really took advantage of that opportunity, right? He really asserted himself and proved to the staff and the front office that he could be that guy,” Davey said. “And, to a certain extent that’s what made this decision easier for the Packers who said hey listen we’re really comfortable with the guy we got and if things don’t work out with Aaron we’re ready to move ready to move forward with him. So, he’s our new quarterback and he’s got all my love.”
Davey closed by saying the trade is “probably best for the Packers and for Aaron as well. But, he’ll be in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame soon when he does retire.”
