The longest-continuously operating community theatre group in Wisconsin is preparing for its 3rd and final show of the season later this week at the Capitol Civic Centre.
The Masquers Inc., in its 92nd year in Manitowoc, will present the musical “City of Angels” on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m.
Director Phillip Jindra tells us the show has nothing to do with the movie by the same name.
“This is the musical on Broadway in 1989, Tony award-winning and it’s about a Hollywood writer who’s adapting his novel for a film noir movie,” he explained. “And, as they’re making the movie we’re seeing the black and white scenes playing out on stage, in addition to the Hollywood scenes that are in color. So, it’s kind of flipping back and forth between two different worlds.”
The show follows Stein, the writer and his kind of alter-ego character, and Stone, the private eye detective played by Sam Oswald.
“As far as the music goes for the show, it was something I was really interested in. It’s a jazz-heavy musical. So that was the first big draw for me before I knew anything about characters,” Oswald told Seehafer News. “And, once I started to dig into it on the internet and when we finally got scripts this was something I thought, okay, this guy’s cool, this is something I can probably pull off pretty well.”
