The Manitowoc Public Library continues its Family Activity Night series tonight with a special presentation about locally grown fresh food called “Lettuce Harvest Together”.
The program will be led by Grow It Forword’s urban farm manager Nina Loomis who will be giving a hands-on demonstration on lettuce grown in their indoor hydroponic farm all year round.
Loomis will have what is known as a “flex farm” unit on hand, a five-square-foot unit that is used vertically.
“There’s no soil in any of the units,” she explained to Seehafer News. “It’s all nutrient-rich water that recirculates in the system growing fresh food.”
Once the lettuce is harvested, it’s wholesaled to local restaurants and donated to local community meals and food pantries.
Loomis told us, “If anyone has a food pantry appointment on a Thursday or a Friday, they will get a bag of lettuce with their food box which is really great because not a lot of items will be fresh food so it’s an amazing asset to have in a food pantry.”
“Lettuce Harvest Together” takes place in the Balkansky Community Room on the library’s 2nd floor at 6:30 p.m.
