Memorial Day is here, and with that comes the Manitowoc Memorial Day parade.
The parade ends at the Veteran Monument on Michigan Avenue and 18th Street for a Memorial Day program.
Todd Brehmer, the Veterans Service Officer of Manitowoc County, discussed what Memorial Day is all about, noting “In context, Memorial Day, of course, is a day of memory to remember those that didn’t come home from war those that aren’t here to be with us anymore.”
Brehmer explains that people often see the holiday as a positive day of memory and celebration of those lost but states that isn’t the case for everyone.
He explained, “If you do say ‘Happy Memorial Day’ to somebody or say ‘Have a happy Memorial weekend’ or something like that and maybe you don’t get the response you were expecting…maybe because to them it has a little different meeting maybe they were there when somebody didn’t come home.”
He adds that those that feel this way aren’t necessarily upset, the day just has a different meaning for them.
The Memorial Day program starts at roughly 10:30 a.m. with taps, the national anthem, and the salute beginning at 11 a.m. It will be roughly half an hour.
The full program will be broadcast on 107.9 FM WOMT and at WOMTradio.com
