When you cut your lawn, there are some places you should and shouldn’t put your grass clippings.
Manitowoc County Agriculture Educator Angie Ulness warns not to dump them where horses are grazing for several reasons.
“Horses get colic, and they would gorge themselves in piles of clippings,” she explained. “They could choke because they gobbled down the grass clippings quickly.”
Another potential danger is that the piles could have mold.
Ulness says that the horses “could experience botulism because the dense piles of grass do not allow for air to circulate. And some of the horses unknowingly will eat toxic weeds and plants they normally do not.”
Rather, Ulness asks that bring your clippings to a compost site like the respected pile at one of the two Manitowoc County Compost Sites.
They are located at 3000 Basswood Road in Manitowoc and at 4189 Woodland Drive in Two Rivers.
