Mental health assessments in the Manitowoc County Jail ensure that inmates are getting the help they need within the jail.
Since Dan Hartwig became sheriff, the Manitowoc County Jail has expanded its mental health services.
He explained while on WOMT’s Be My Guest program, “We have 32 hours of mental health from a counselor full-time at the jail, we also have an AODA counselor for 32 hours a week. We’ve had to increase those since I became sheriff, I think we initially had 20 for mental health, we bumped it up to 32.”
With mental health counselors available, inmates are able to request to meet with counselors.
Correctional officers can also reach out to the counselors if they believe certain inmates may benefit from meeting with a counselor.
Though the jail is not designed to give long-term mental health care, they are ensuring that services are there for those who need them.
