Trans issues were a hot topic last week at the MPSD School Board meeting.
Yesterday, we told you about the vote to disallow “controversial issues” being discussed in class, but citizens also raised a question regarding the “bathroom situation”.
That in reference to Superintendent Jim Feil’s intent to limit bathroom access to only biological sex identity.
The measure also stated that students must only use the bathroom that aligns with their biological sex.
2022 graduate Rori Beatty raised her concerns about this new proposition.
“Our mission states that we are to engage and inspire ALL learners,” she noted. “However, in this policy, we invalidate the transgender community in our district.”
However, the board removed the item from the agenda, and thus no discussion was held.
Along with that, the Board did not discuss the guideline that teachers are not permitted to call a student by their preferred name without parent permission.
Meaning if a student wanted to go by a different name that is not a common nickname, they must have proof of a parent or guardian’s permission.
Some of the parents present were upset over the last-minute decision of the Board to remove the bathroom policy from their agenda and of their dismissal of the policy against respecting a student’s pronouns/preferred names without parental knowledge.
