Some changes are coming to the way Manitowoc City employees will receive wage increases.
City employees’ wages tend to fluctuate alongside market rates, and they do not have longevity pay to adjust to that.
This means that being in a position for 12 years could not even be close to what the market says the pay should be at that time.
To combat this, the city council brought the idea of a five-year rate to discuss.
While on WOMT’s Be My Guest program, Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels explained that a five-year rate means, “If you’re in the same position for five years, you’ll get bumped up to what the market says we should be paying that position, not just the annual adjustments of 1, 2, 3% or whatever we can budget for that year.”
Nickels and other city council members hope that this new adjustment will help “keep employees, retain employees, show them there is a path at the end of the tunnel that they’re not going to be stuck in limbo for ten years being here and never get to the point of where they should be paid.”
This change will take effect on January 1st of 2024 to allow time for budgeting and to inform all city employees.
