The Fourth of July is often a busy day for Americans looking to celebrate the nation’s independence.
In Manitowoc, the Maritime Museum is hosting SubFest to foster the festivities.
The annual SubFest is running over four days this year starting Saturday throughout the Fourth.
The museum will be open from 9-5 every day of the celebrations, and the Sub Pub will be open Friday through Monday from 5-10.
Officially kicking off on Saturday, music and food trucks will be scattered around the area.
Then at 1, Carl Sieracki will present a program entitled “Manitowoc’s World War II Contribution” in the Riverview Room.
Emily Shedal, a coordinator with the museum spoke on the WCUB Breakfast Club about a tradition taking place Sunday morning.
“9:00, we will have a Tolling the Boats ceremony on U.S.S. Cobia,” she explained. “That’s just to honor our fallen submariners and submarines that sank during World War II and the submariners who lost their lives onboard those submarines.”
She adds that those interested in viewing the ceremony are welcome to watch from the River Walk instead of paying admission to enter the museum.
The fun continues into Monday with music around the downtown area and a Silent Service Speaks Program starting at 2 in the Riverview Room.
Shedal says the program will be a Subvet Roundtable where Subvets will “be sharing their war stories and talking about their comradery”.
The program is free to enter with admission to the museum.
Finally on the big day, the museum’s admission is dropped to $4 with a variety of events taking place.
Starting at 10, the Fourth of July parade will be underway as it passes the museum.
Also starting at 10 until 4, an education tent, ROV underwater robot program, and military vehicles will be in the Museum’s North Lot.
Starting at 11, live music will take the museum’s main area stage with several different musical guests throughout the day into the night.
The Sub Pub hours are extended for the Fourth, starting at 11:00 a.m. until roughly 10:00 when the fireworks are wrapped.
