German-born Bernhard Langer not only won the U.S. Senior Open over the weekend, he also made the history books while doing it.
The 65-year-old pro-golfer became the oldest champion in tour history, breaking the old record by eight years, and he became the winningest player in PGA Tour Champions history with 46 titles.
Langer finished his round Sunday at SentryWorld with a 7 under par 277, which was two strokes better than Madison native Steve Stricker, and three strokes better than fellow Wisconsinite Jerry Kelly.
Langer said of his victory, “It’s certainly one of the greatest tournaments we ever compete in, and to beat this field, where everybody was here, especially Stricker and Kelly on their home [turf], is a very special feeling.”
With the win, Langer is also guaranteed a spot in the next 10 U.S. Senior Open Championships, including the 2024 U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Rhode Island.
Oh yeah, he was also given a check for $720,000.
