Local plant expert Tom Hartman had some encouraging news late last week regarding the summer growing season.
During an appearance on WOMT’s Be My Guest program, the owner of Hartman’s Town and Country Greenhouse said it’s been a very good start to the season as long as you have been keeping uyp with watering.
“My (plants) at home that I water are looking very nice and coming along very nicely,” he told host Lee Douglas. “We picked the first few cherry tomatoes this week and yeah, so the bountiful harvest is coming now.”
Ideally, Hartman says we could use an inch of rain per week to keep things green and growing.
Regarding fertilizer use, he suggests fertilizing plants once per week.
“We sell Jack’s or Miracle Grow or whatever. They’re very easy to use, however, follow the label directions,” Hartman suggested. “If one scoop is good, two scoops are not better because fertilizer is a salt and will burn if put on too heavily.”
And, to tell you how fast summer is moving along, Hartman said he and his crew started planting poinsettias (looking ahead to Christmastime) last Thursday.
