Sixth District Congressman Glenn Grothman has been named to an 18-member Congressional Task Force to combat Mexican Drug Cartels.
The Republican representative from Greenbush in Sheboygan County spoke with Seehafer News about the importance of this assignment by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
“Because I’ve spent a lot of time dealing with border issues prior to this, we have a situation in this country in which over 100,000 people are dying every year of illegal drug overdoses,” Grothman explained. “Almost all of those drugs, or at least the ingredients for those drugs, are flowing across our Southern border.”
Furthermore, Grothman says, most of the people who come here illegally “over 200,000 a month are paying money to the Mexican drug cartels as well. So, really when we’re looking at what’s going on at the border, its almost more relevant just how we deal with the drug cartels than the Mexican government itself.”
We also asked the area congressman about the goal and timeline for this task force.
“I think Kevin McCarthy expects something within the next three to five months to put on the floor of the House, hopefully we’ll get it out of the House of Representatives,” he replied. “I think to a certain extent there’s gonna have to be tougher penalties on people coming across the border and we have to do more to restrict the overall number of people coming across the border because the more people we have coming across the border, of course, the more drugs are flowing here.”
Grothman closed by stated, “Along with the other 17 members of Congress appointed to this (panel), I will investigate these criminal organizations, propose concrete solutions and educate the American people on the severity of this issue.”
