The mayor of Milwaukee has expressed his willingness to collaborate with Republican lawmakers in order to enact new gun laws within the state.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson, in a statement made Thursday, emphasized his intention to build upon the relationships he has fostered with Republican leaders throughout the year, with the aim of achieving tangible progress on gun-related issues, potentially as early as next year.
While Mayor Johnson did not provide specific details regarding the nature of the proposed gun laws, he conveyed his determination to take action in order to address the alarming rise in shootings and homicides plaguing Milwaukee.
However, it should be noted that garnering support for such legislation may prove challenging.
Republican lawmakers in Madison have consistently rejected numerous endeavors by Democrats and former Milwaukee mayors to tighten existing laws surrounding background checks or implement red flag laws in Wisconsin.
