Yesterday, we told you about the work being done to get Dillon’s Law passed at a federal level.
Now, in the fourth and final part of our series on the legacy of Dillon Mueller, we take a look at what his parents have done to directly save lives on a more personal level.
On top of their work in getting legislation passed to make getting epinephrine auto-injectors easier, Angel and George Mueller have been traveling around the state training people so they are eligible to get them.
As we mentioned on Tuesday, Dillon’s Law, named after their son who died from an allergic reaction to a bee sting, made it so any trained individuals can have access to the life-saving medication.
Angel explained that they were trained by the Wisconsin Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, more commonly referred to as WAOPS to conduct what they call the Do It For Dillon Anaphylaxis Training Course.
“That’s the curriculum that’s approved by the Wisconsin State Department of Health,” she explained. “We did a bunch of practice classes with the UW System in front of WAOPS Board, and they approved us to do the teaching of this education.”
While Angel admits that neither she nor George are medical professionals, they are able to teach individuals, businesses, and other groups a lot about anaphylaxis and what to do if someone is having an allergic reaction.
She explained that the course is about an hour and 15 minutes and covers “The signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, how to administer an epinephrine autoinjector, how to store an epinephrine autoinjector, and what to do after you have administered an epinephrine autoinjector.”
Through their hard work in administering this training, Angel tells us that at least 11 lives have been saved.
“I know this because the folks that have taken the course, family, friends and relatives of the life that was saved, have gotten ahold of us and said ‘I am really really glad I took your course,” Angel revealed.
One of the things that is taught in the training is the many different symptoms of anaphylaxis, which can be something as mild as some nausea or discomfort, all the way up to becoming short of breath, vomiting, or swelling of the tongue or lips.
If you would like to take the course, you can visit EpiForDilly.com to see when the next course will be held.
Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to sign up to have the course brought to them directly.
