A leisurely walk on a secluded section of the beach at Silver Creek Park took a turn when a Manitowoc couple came across a hypodermic needle washed up at Silver Creek Park in a part of the beach accessible near the 26th hole on the Silver Creek Park Golf Course.
This occurrence brings to light a question that many people may not know the answer to, what do you do if you come across a used needle?
Sergeant Paul Krock of the Manitowoc Police Department tells us what you should do if you are in this situation.
“The best practice here in the city of Manitowoc is to call the non-emergency police number,” he explained. “An officer will respond and they have the proper equipment to dispose of that needle properly whether that be latex gloves, sharps containers, or things of that nature.”
Since instances like this one have been a consistent problem for the past few years, squad cars for the Manitowoc Police Department are equipped with sharps boxes and latex gloves so that officers are prepared to deal with this kind of situation.
Though it is not a common occurrence for needles to be found in public spaces, it is important to know what to do.
“Unfortunately, we do run into situations where they are found, whether it be on the beach or just somewhere out in public or in the community,” Krock noted. “Again, the best thing to do is not to touch it, call the non-emergency police number and we’ll respond and dispose of that needle safely.”
The non-emergency line at the Manitowoc Police Department can be reached by calling (920) 686-6500.
Knowing what to do in a situation like this one can help to ensure the safety of our community.
