Three new bills were introduced yesterday that aim to benefit Wisconsin seniors and students.
State Representative Shae Sortwell testified in the Senate Committee on Universities and Revenue Wednesday (August 23rd) on said bills.
The first focuses on senior property tax relief.
He explains, “I continue to hear from my constituents about their concerns on soaring property tax bills. This hits our seniors the hardest when they are on a fixed income”.
The proposed legislation would provide up to a $500 annual refundable income tax credit.
The other two bills would seek to help Wisconsin students.
With the rising school psychologist shortage, the first bill would create a loan forgiveness program for graduate students going into that field up to $10,000 a year, for three years.
The second bill would end the “unfair practice” of scholarship displacement, when “a student has their college financial aid package reduced due to receiving a private scholarship”.
Rep. Sortwell is hopeful to get this legislation passed.
