Every year students in 4-H pridefully present their animals at the Manitowoc County Fair.
As the fair wraps up this weekend, a 19-year-old member shares her experience, leading up to her last showing.
Clarissa Ulness has been showing animals with 4-H for the past 10 years, though started at age 4.
Clarissa explains her experience bringing animals to the fair over the years.
“This year I brought one to the fair, there’s been years where I’ve brought the maximum of four, so probably 20 to 15 animals over the course of the years,” she estimated. “It’s crazy to think back to my first year of 4-H and the animals I brought that year, and how this year I’ve brought the same animal for the last 4 years, and she goes back to the calf that I won at the fair.”
She also told us, “Since I’ve been here so long, every year there’s something to do, something to learn. I’ve picked up on older kids in the club, and different adults in the county on how to keep our 4-H club running smoothly, but also the 4-H club running smoothly.”
She adds that showing animals can shape a person to have more discipline, a harder work ethic, and to create strong friendships.
Clarissa is taking her passion in 4-H to UW-Madison to study Dairy Science and Design and Communication.
