Harvest time is here and it’s time to reap the rewards of your bounty! Not only should we be celebrating our food harvests, but also be thinking forward to next year and saving seeds! Master Gardeners of Manitowoc County, in conjunction with Lakeshore Seed Collective, is offering a FREE program at Manitowoc Public Library for you to learn about saving your seeds. Beginner to expert seed savers are welcome to join in the conversation on Saturday, September 9, from 10-11 AM during “Bountiful: Harvesting & Saving Your Own Seeds” in the Balkansky Community Room.
The event continues the programing at MPL centered around their Seed Library, which was introduced last spring. Philosophically, the Seed Library exists to provide seeds to the community and educate gardeners to be more self-sustaining as a community.
Join Master Gardeners of Manitowoc County and Lakeshore Seed Collective for this basic botany talk on flower anatomy, pollination, and seed production. There will be a demonstration of all the different types of seeds that have been collected both in our gardens and in the wild.
Tammy O’Connor, one of the event’s organizers and co-founder of Lakeshore Seed Collective, is inspired by, “all of the history, stories, and legacies seeds bring with them.” Deena Larsen—which, full disclosure, is me, the other co-founder of the Seed Collective—likes to save seeds so she doesn’t have to buy as many for the next year. And as for the Master Gardeners, I’ve been known to comment that “The Master Gardeners are a wonderful resource in our community and we appreciate them conducting this event.” Tammy and I have also created a Lakeshore Seed Collective Facebook page with a goal in mind of helping to build a community of seed savers in this area.
Another attractive feature of “Bountiful” is that there is no cost to attend this event!

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, September 9, at “Bountiful”!
