With this weekend marking the end of the summer season, the Wisconsin DNR is reminding ATV and UTV riders who plan to get one more ride in to stay safe.
So far in 2023, 22 people have died while riding an ATV, and 20 of them were not wearing a helmet. That is slightly higher than last year when 21 people died.
Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, the DNR’s Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator notes that anyone under the age of 18 is required by law to wear a helmet even on private property.
However, he also says, “Across all ages, we know that there is a much higher chance of serious injury when operators and passengers are not wearing helmets and seatbelts.”
