Recently, the remains of a schooner that sank in Lake Michigan in 1881 were discovered by shipwreck hunters.
The schooner, named Trinidad, was found in July by maritime historians Brendon Baillod and Robert Jaeck using side-scan sonar.
It is still intact and so well-preserved that it still contains the crew’s belongings.
The Trinidad, which was carrying coal headed for Milwaukee, sank on May 13, 1881, after passing through the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal.
The Trinidad is considered one of the best-preserved shipwrecks in Wisconsin waters, and it was located about 270 feet deep off Algoma, Wisconsin.
Its captain and eight crew members survived.
