22 years ago, today (Monday), 343 firefighters lost their lives trying to save people at the World Trade Center in New York City.
The Manitowoc Fire Department is again remembering those firefighters by putting out a pair of boots and bunker pants on the driveway at the main fire station.
Manitowoc Firefighter Jason Wagner says he was listening on the radio hearing what happened on 9/11, but at the time he didn’t understand how significant it was.
But he tells Seehafer News that’s changed after twenty years.
“I compare it to like my mom because she remembers when President Kennedy Jr. was shot,” he says. “It’s one of those events in history that I remember exactly where I was, what happened, the day, everything like she does.”
He says for firefighters, it’s an annual reminder of the sacrifice first responders would make in the event of a catastrophe.
“Every single one of us would do the exact same thing,” he said with confidence. “We would head to the fire or to the disaster route instead of running away.”
Four planes were hijacked on September 11, 2001.
Two crashed into the World Trade Center, causing them to collapse.
A third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia, and a fourth crashed in a field in Somerset County Pennsylvania.
