It was a quiet day at Reedsville High School Monday after 17-year-old Keegan Grimm died in a head-on collision Sunday (September 10).
Principal Melissa Wiese says the district met with staff and the senior class and gave them a space in the library to allow them to process what happened.
To help students and staff, more grief counselors will be available at school all week because Wiese says they only have one guidance counselor for the entire school.
“All of our student needs right now are different and they are going to need things at different times,” she says. “We wanted to make sure that no one had to wait or we had to find someone available. We just wanted to make sure we had people available at any given time for what our students need at any given time.”
This isn’t the first time the district has dealt with an accident that killed a student.
Student Jevon Lemke died during a spring break trip in 2018 and they lost another female student to a car accident in 2019.
Weise says there is no manual on how to handle incidents like this.
“Do what your gut feels right. And at the end of the day we have to not only have to take care of our students but to take care of our staff,” she explains. “That’s another important group that’s often overlooked.”
Grimm played three sports at Reedsville High School.
A 21-year-old Menasha woman also died in the accident.
