A problem many citizens have pointed out, especially over the past several years is how the current bond system appears to be failing.
A high percentage of local crimes we report include charges of bail jumping, which is when an individual commits a crime while out on bail, with the felony and misdemeanor tags indicating the severity of their previous crimes.
Several Brown County Supervisors have noticed a similar problem and are calling into question the tool used by court commissioners to set bail.
The tool known as a public safety assessment considers factors such as the risk of failing to show up in court and the risk of re-offending, but Supervisor Keith Deneys notes that it does not consider how many pending charges the person has.
Just if they have at least one.
He, along with the rest of the Brown County Criminal Justice Coordinating Board are set to discuss the bond assessment tool and will determine if substantial changes need to be made.
That meeting is slated for this afternoon (September 13th).
