This week is National Farm Safety and Health Week.
This year’s theme is “No One Can Take Your Place”, specifically talking about farmers working in fields and heading onto the roads.
Manitowoc County Ag Educator Angie Ulness tells Seehafer News, “This is emphasizing how important everyone is as part of the farm family and community. Sometimes driving equipment on roads can be a dreaded task for producers, but it can also be a dreaded feeling for you all out there when you get stuck behind a tractor or a big piece of equipment.”
Ulness went on to explain that vigilance is key.
“The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics as of 2021, Agriculture is ranked 3rd under construction and transportation were housing for the number of fatal work injuries that happen,” she noted. “As we’re nearing some of the busiest times, just be mindful of the equipment.”
Ulness encourages drivers to be mindful of passing lines, and upcoming driveways when farm equipment is present on the road, and to take note of any left turns that equipment may take.
