Manitowoc is going to the dogs this week.
Starting on Sunday, the Manitowoc Police Department is hosting the Wisconsin Law Enforcement K9 Handlers Association, meaning squad cars from a wide variety of agencies will be in Manitowoc County for training.
Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer estimates that there will be around 200 K9 handlers and their K9 companions through Thursday.
Local K9 handlers with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Manitowoc and Two Rivers Police Departments are organizing the event which Chief Reimer noted will include trainers from all over.
“We will bring trainers from outside the area, even as far as Canada,” he revealed. “They will come in here and help them train in the newest techniques for dogs and things we can do to make sure they are the best K9s and K9 handlers they can be.”
Chief Reimer also said, “You can have a terrific K9, but if the handler doesn’t know what the dog is indicating, it’s not going to be helpful.”
