Two landscaping experts have offered their suggestions for lawn and garden maintenance now that Fall has officially arrived.
Tim Krueger and Ryan Kubsch from Lakeland Landscape in Manitowoc appeared on WOMT’s “Welcome Home” program with Bartow Builders.
They said “Just as you did a lot of work watering, weeding, things like that to your lawn over summer there is a lot of maintenance that’s required in fall also. A lot of people use mulching blades when they cut their lawns which is very beneficial, putting nutrients back into the lawn. However, over time the more mature your lawn is that mulch builds up into thatch which can actually act as a negative.”
One of the things Tim and Ryan recommend for more mature lawns is to have it aerated or cored.
They explained that it takes little plugs out of your existing lawn and it actually allows your lawn to spread so its not quite as thick and your watering, rain, things like that have an easier time getting into your root base.
And, as Fall progresses, get rid of those accumulating leaves on the lawn.
The duo said it’s “very critical” to get those leaves out of certain areas where they may congregate because if those aren’t taken care of in fall they can do some damage to your lawn in spring, leaving actual bare spots and kill the grass.
Another must in the late stages of Fall, according to Krueger and Kubsch, is to cut your lawn really low, and, edge your sidewalks to prevent cracks where weeds can germinate and create problems when you use the snowblower this winter.
Other suggestions offered to homeowners include:
Use those raked leaves to place back in your flowerbeds.
Thin out some of your perennial flower beds.
Check for weeds and adding a layer of mulch is very important to holding the moisture in and keeping some of the sunlight out during the winter.
