A weekend to learn more about homelessness returns to Manitowoc.
It’s the seventh year for Cardboard City at First Presbyterian Church on North 8th Street.
It’s a night put on by the Manitowoc County Habitat for Humanity, Hope House of Manitowoc County, and the Haven Men’s Homeless Shelter to give more information about homelessness in the community, how people overcome it, and how the organizations are helping those in need.
People are asked to sleep in their cars or bring a cardboard box or tent to sleep in overnight.
Haven Executive Director Michael Etheridge says the organizations aren’t just making light of homelessness, you have to be out in the elements yourself.
“Last year it was 35 degrees,” Etheridge explains. “And the next day, just to walk into my home and feel the heat. Thank God I have a home to come to but I couldn’t imagine literally homeless people doing this (finding a place to stay) day in and day out.”
It costs $20 a person and $60 for a family to participate. It’s next Saturday, October 14th at First Presbyterian starting at 5:00 p.m.
People who decide to participate must also get pledges from people to donate to the causes.
