A bill constructed by an Eastern Wisconsin Senator aimed at protecting election workers has taken a big step forward.
The measure known as the Election Worker Protection Act, co-authored by Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere and Representative Joy Goeben of Hobart, has cleared a Senate committee in unanimous fashion.
The bill clarified the definition of the term “election official”, prohibits the disclosure of personally identifiable information of election officials, makes harming election officials a Class I felony, and provides whistleblower protection to an election official’s employment if the election official lawfully reports what he or she believes are election irregularities.
Despite the fact that it was written by two Republican legislators, the duo says it has received significant bipartisan support.
Sen, Jacque stated in a news release, “Free, fair, and peaceful elections are the bedrock of representative government. Voters who participate in our elections should expect these guarantees, as should those who work at the polls.”
