Five years ago for their 50th reunion, the 1968 graduating class at Manitowoc Lincoln High School donated a Wall Wrap project in the JFK Phy-Ed Unit.
Now, for their 55th the class decided to do something that is a little longer-lasting in this, the 100th anniversary of their alma mater.
Reunion spokesman, Pat Willis, tells Seehafer News their latest venture is called the Lincoln High School Class of ‘68 Legacy Fund.
“We’re starting to get up in years now and thinking about something that we want to last,” he explained. “The idea is that the endowment fund would provide scholarships through the income of the fund and the fund itself would go on forever.”
Luckily, he says, early in the process they got a very generous donation through a couple of classmates “who met in high school, got married and wanted to do something as a tribute to their years at Lincoln. So, thanks to their generous starting gift we’re up to a little over $118,000 now.”
Willis says they’re confident the fund will generate enough income to provide multiple scholarships in future years, adding a committee is establishing some criteria for selecting students who seek higher education in the STEM or teaching field at the college or trade school level.
He said the committee is “initially planning to award 3-to-4 scholarships in the neighborhood of $2,000.”
And, it’s an ongoing fundraising project with classmates encouraged to remember the legacy fund in their wills.
