The Roncalli girls’ tennis program went out with a bang, as the Lamers family made their way to state.
Head coach Kristin Lamers, and her daughters Megan and Madison Lamers made the trip to Madison as the two girls qualified for the tournament as a doubles team this season.
While speaking with the family on WOMT Sports Talk it was brought up that, although coaching her daughters is an honor, it can be hard, but noted she is thankful for her assistant coach Ryan Manis
“Sometimes I just send him out there, and say ‘You got to go talk to them because if I go out there, I’m going to be in total mom mode,'” she explained. “Sometimes, I feel like they want that encouragement, sometimes they want to see mom, and sometimes they want nothing to do with mom and they’d rather see Ryan and get right to the game plan. I don’t want to hear what mom has to say, we’re focused on winning”.
While speaking with Madison and Megan later in the program, we learned that the experience at state was nerve-wracking as they took their first swing at a state title.
Megan Lamers seemed to be the calmer of the two, however, despite being the youngest.
Megan explained that she was “a little nervous at the beginning not knowing what it was going to be like, but I’ve played at Neilson before so playing down on the courts wasn’t as scary but playing other teams I’ve never seen before was”.
Madison went on to describe the few difficulties she has playing with her sister, although, when it comes to the aftermath of a tough match, there can be some hurdles to overcome.
Madison said they, as sisters tend to do, “nit-pick at each other right away and then we get told, it’s not just their fault you did some things wrong to, but after going through what we did wrong we have things to work on at practice.”
With that, the Lamers and the Roncalli girls’ tennis team put a cap on their season as they begin to prepare for next year.
