There’s a brand new playground at Neshotah Park in Two Rivers.
The city held a grand opening yesterday for the updated and handicapped-accessible playground that features slides, climbing equipment, and other adventures people of all ages can enjoy.
Parks and Recreations Director Mike Mathis says the playground also includes a rubber surface so it’s safer for kids to walk on.
He says the area where the playground is now was an old baseball diamond.
“We weren’t really using it,” he explained. “That’s because we already have a great complex at Vietnam Veterans Park where we softball and baseball. So, the thought was let’s repurpose this area that’s underused by putting in a new playground that’s centrally located and where you can see Neshotah Beach. I can’t for summer so people can come back and forth from the beach.”
A grandparent we spoke with says the new park is very nice.
“It’s very cool, it’s updated, and nice,” she described. “Plus, it’s also got a soft bottom for the kids which is really cool.” When asked if she would bring her grandkids back, she said “Oh absolutely!”
Mathis says the $400,000 project has been in the works for about a year because getting grants used to build parks is hard.
But after the project gained momentum last fall, everything fell into place.
Two Rivers City Manager Greg Buckley says there will be future improvements coming to the park as well.
“Plans call for more pedestrian pathways into the park,” he said. “It also includes replacing some of the turf areas with pollinator gardens and further investment into the facilities.”
Several families brought their kids to play on the new equipment while enjoying refreshments like coffee, apple cider, and doughnuts.
Cool City Brewing Company also came and collected donations that will go back into the park.
The playground is located on Pierce Street just after 21st Street.
