The three council members who opposed allowing two firefighters who live outside the city limits also opposed a side letter labor agreement between the firefighters’ union and the city.
The Manitowoc Common Council voted 6-3 on the agreement that expands how far firefighters can live outside the city limits to be allowed to work for the fire department from 25 to 50 miles because of a lack of qualified applicants.
Alderman Eric Sitkiewitz says he didn’t like how the mileage increase wasn’t separate from another agreement with the firefighters which is why he voted no.
The other aldermen who voted no were Todd Reckelberg and Steve Czekala.
We asked Fire Chief Todd Blaser about the agreement, but he did not want to comment.
