The 51st State Girls Volleyball Tournament gets underway later today at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
On tap this afternoon and tonight are four quarterfinal matches in Division-1 including #2 seed Oconomowoc meet #7 Burlington and 3rd seeded Appleton North facing #6 Franklin both at 1:00 p.m.
And then at 7:00, it’ll be top-seeded Divine Savior Holy Angels meeting #8 River Falls and #4 Hamilton vs. 5-seed Waunakee on side-by-side courts at the Resch.
Meanwhile, opening round action in the Boys Volleyball Tourney takes place this morning at 10 am and 4 pm with four Division-1 matches.
Girls Division 2, 3, and 4 semi-final play happens on Friday, starting at 9 am.
The 4-time defending champion Howards Grove Tigers, with the #1 seed, take the court at 11:30 am against #4 St. Mary Catholic in the state Division-3 semifinals.
Championship matches in the single-division boys tournament and 4 division girls tourney will all occur on Saturday.
The WIAA Boys State Soccer Tournament also begins its 3-day run later this morning at Southeast Sales Powersports Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
There are semifinal matches today in Divisions 1, 2 and 3. Area teams competing for a gold ball include the Plymouth Panthers, who’ll meet Somerset this afternoon at 1:30 in a D-3 contest.
Prior to that, the De Pere Redbirds take to the pitch to face top-seeded Brookfield East in the large school bracket at 11 a.m.
The Phantoms of West De Pere play a D-2 semifinal match today at 4:30 against the 1-seed, Waukesha West.
Tomorrow, two area squads, St. Mary Catholic and the co-op of Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran have state semifinal games in Division-4.
