As the weather turns colder, multiple species o critters or pests are looking for a place to call home, and you could be sharing it with mice, rats and the like if you don’t start preparing now.
Kyle Pasek is the second-generation owner of 4K’s Pest Control in Two Rivers.
He says it doesn’t take much for mice to enter your home and make a mess.
“We are talking a whole ¼ inch diameter actually,” he explained. “If they can fit their head through it, they can tend to fit the rest of their bodies through it.”
Pasek says mice have poor eyesight and rely on their whiskers to hunker down and start carving out their territory.
He says the best way to see if you have an infestation is by “Opening up kitchen drawers, kitchen cabinets, seeing the droppings…If you do have evidence of that, basically you are going to need to rely on trapping the mouse.”
A good old-fashioned trap with cheese for bait still does the trick, but many homeowners, including Pasek, have turned to glue boards to catch mice which is more sanitary and just as effective.
The local exterminator emphasizes the importance of thoroughly deep-cleaning your home once you’ve eliminated the problem(s).
He suggests using any “basic household cleaner… anything with bleach in it…it will disinfect…and you should be in really good shape.”
To stop the potential of inviting mice to co-habituate with you this winter, Pasek says it’s vital to keep your home free of clutter and garbage.
Other nuisance pests include rats, wasps and/or hornets, spiders, red squirrels, and raccoons.
