Due to the recent closure of Coin Laundromat on Calumet Avenue in Manitowoc about three months ago, there are only two operating laundromats in the city.
And while Globe Laundry in Washington Street is getting ready to reopen after a January fire, Owner Craig Dequaine says they should have been reopened months ago.
But the businesses’ insurance company isn’t making it easy to do.
“So the insurance company, they put in big bold red letters that no work can be done until everything is settled,” he explained.
Dequaine says he’s noticed how there has been a lack of laundromat options in the city. He says he feels bad for customers that they must choose somewhere else to do laundry and get dry cleaning done.
He also feels bad for the workers.
“Because they all had to get jobs,” he described. “I could protect them with payroll protection for two months after the fire and then they didn’t have to do any job searches for another three months for unemployment. But now most have had to do that they’ve found other jobs.”
But even when the insurance claims are done, he says it could still take months to reopen.
If you have clothes at Globe that haven’t been picked up, you can call Craig at 920-621-3617 and they can set something up.
We’ve placed calls to the Manitowoc Laundromat asking why they’ve closed, after a sign saying, “Permanently Closed” and “This Laundromat to close 8-18-23” was placed on the door back in August.
We have not heard back from the owner.
