Three conditional-use permits for recovery housing were approved by the Manitowoc City Council.
The housing is a place for people with substance abuse issues to stay while they are trying to kick the habit.
Residents who’ve been helped through the homes and people residents who opposed the permits packed the council chambers to speak their minds before they were approved. Before the regular council meeting,
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels read a proclamation to honor 30 years of the sister cities program between the city and Tamagawa, Japan.
Members from the Tamagawa Council appeared over Zoom.
During the regular council meeting, the city’s 2024 budget was approved by an 8-2 vote with two council members voting against it.
Manitowoc Police Officer Andre St. Pierre also received a valor award for his help in trying to rescue a 12-year-old boy who drowned in Lake Michigan at Neshotah Beach earlier this year.
Not only was he given the award, but he and Officer Bethany Johnson were sworn in as police officers with the department.
The Manitowoc Fire Department also has a new assistant fire chief after Ben Kraynek was sworn in.
