It’s been 30 years since the cities of Manitowoc and Kamagawa, Japan both formed a relationship as Sister Cities.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels read a proclamation to honor how many years it’s been.
The proclamation explains that in 1993, the relationship was formed to “serve the community interest of international and intercultural understanding, awareness and communication while promoting diversity and the involvement of its members and citizens in programs, exchanges and projects.”
Several people who had recently traveled to Kamagawa discussed how great the relationship between the two cities has been.
President of the Manitowoc International Relations Association Tina Prigge says people have been touched by their involvement with sister city activities.
“From adult delegation to exchange students with home stays to sharing music, art, pen pal letters, secret Santa gifts and more our connection is profound,” she explained. “There have also been a few international marriages.”
Kamagawa Mayor Takao Hasegawa also recognized how special the relationship between the two cities is.
“I hope that the 30th anniversary of our sister city affiliation will mark the beginning of a new journey that will further promote the development of our cities and our friendship,” the mayor said through a translator. “I wish you all the best of luck in the future.”
The Manitowoc council also recognized the gift given to delegates who went over to Japan.
It’s three gourds engraved with symbols that recognize the Clipper City.
Tourism Director Courtney Hansen says there’s a saying in Japan that if you have three gourds, it’s a combination of three good things and is good luck.
