Manitowoc Lincoln’s wrestling team will introduce a new team this coming season, with a large jump in numbers seen this year.
We learned what this new season will present while speaking with Lincoln’s head coach, Tyler Wetenkamp.
Lincoln has struggled to fill their roster in past years, however, coach Wetenkamp explained that this will not be the case this year.
“We finally have enough kids to fill a whole roster at every weight class,” he revealed. “I’m excited to put out a full lineup for our dual meets.”
Although wrestling is an individual sport, Wetenkamp emphasized the importance of chemistry within the team.
“Chemistry is a big deal,” he said. “Especially in the practice room because all the hard work that takes place during practice comes out during meets. Even though it’s individual during meets, they all kind of come to a bond while they’re practicing which makes meets a lot more fun.”
Wetenkamp has been coaching since 2017, and in those years, he has learned how to maneuver different types of wrestlers, figuring out what works best for them.
“Everybody’s a little bit different…that’s something I’ve learned over the years,” he explained. “Each kid you have to talk to differently. Some respond to more hard-coaching, some don’t respond to that quite as well. It just depends on who the kid is.”
The Ships will have their first boys varsity tournament this Saturday (December 2nd) at Kimberly, and the girls will have their first girls-only tournament on December 8th at Brillion.
