Law enforcement agents from around the area converged on the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office earlier this month for Veterans in Crisis Training.
The program, dubbed Veterans Helping Veterans, was offered to any current or former military members who continue to serve the public as officers/deputies.
Local Veteran Advocate Ashly Smits tells Seehafer News that over 20 people attended the training from Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Calumet Counties, Manitowoc Police Department, and also the State Patrol.
The training was provided by the Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program with the goal of better equipping officers to assist veterans in crisis and refer them to local resources.
It is estimated that 19% of law enforcement officers have a military background, while only 6% of the general population can claim the same.
