The Lakeshore Humane Society is still being affected in part by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Executive Director Tina Nichols said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that there have been a lot of returns of pets to the shelter, especially dogs.
She says it seems to be tied into the pandemic.
Many people adopted dogs during the pandemic because they were stuck at home for a lot of time.
“During that time they were home all the time with these dogs,” Nichols explained. “And so, then all of a sudden, they go back to work or become more active and the dog the dog shows separation anxiety because they were never separated.”
She says the increase in dogs not being claimed has gone up not only in Manitowoc, but also around the nation.
She says cats not being claimed was always high, but the rate of dogs not being claimed is at the same level as cats are now.
According to the humane society’s website, there are about 63 cats and 18 dogs ready to be adopted.
