A local group of women are committed to philanthropy.
The group 100+ Women Who Care of Manitowoc County hosts several funding meetings throughout the year with the goal of supporting a local nonprofit.
On WOMT’s Be My Guest, Co-Founder, and Chair Marketing Committee Member Susie Bown told host Lee Douglas how their meetings work.
“Three nonprofits get 10 minutes of speak time, starting with 5 minutes telling us about their nonprofit,” she explained. “All three will give their presentation and then they have 5 minutes of question and answer and the body of women decide who they want to receive their money. Everybody writes a check for $100 towards that nonprofit directly, there’s no middle person, and voila.”
The group began with 100 members, as the name suggests, but has since amassed over 230 women.
In total, the group has donated over $120,000 since May of 2021, and they are “thrilled” to have had that impact on the area.
More recently, the group has applied for and received support from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation to give an additional $5,000 in matching funds.
Since originally starting in Michigan in 2006, the mission has been spread across the nation with groups of 100 women, 100 men, and 100 children.
The meetings are open to the public for a night of “food, fun, and friends with a purpose,” and Bown invites businesses and individuals to match donations.
The next meeting is on February 6th, starting at 6:30.
