A woman from Barron County has been sentenced to one year and a day in federal prison for committing fraud against one of Wisconsin’s Indian tribes.
Karen Johnson, aged 55, embezzled over $200,000 from the St. Croix Chippewa Indians while working as a clerk in the tribe’s housing authority.
Johnson manipulated the system by writing herself checks and cashing phony invoices.
A federal judge emphasized that Johnson’s actions deprived those in need and warranted a prison sentence.
